The main attraction of the game is raising, learning management skills with, and battling NetMonsters. A NetMonster is a creation of digital technology, A.I., and even raw data. Each monster is digital code and determines its attacking skills and defenses. It’s the goal of the player to discover and collect all of the NetMonsters and to help create a digital army. Each monster has the potential to be improved and transformed via the monster’s evolution. Rather than improving monster stats, the monster physically and permanently transforms into a more advanced and powerful cyber form. It takes a long time to raise and improve a monster to be strong enough to take on data zones that are guarded by more powerful foes.

Combat in the game takes place over a data stream, and is of the turn-based variety. Players will encounter corrupted data and rogue programs. When this happens players will enter combat. In combat the player has to utilize their available skills and team member elemental types in order to counter the enemy types. There are many types of abilities in the game. Some of these abilities can be offensive and some can be defensive. In order to win players must utilize skills that are effective against enemy types and combine them in a way to overwhelm the foe. There are many threats in the game. Bosses are large viruses that control big areas of the digital world. These bosses have large health pools and are very damaging. The game encourages players to utilize different types of NetMonsters to their advantage. These types include fire, water and data. The elemental types are very similar to games of the rock paper scissors variety. The turn based nature of the encounters gives players time to strategize how they will approach larger threats and the tricks they will use to attempt to defeat them.

Exploration is a significant aspect of the player’s experience as they progress through the different virtual areas. Some of these areas are functioning game servers that are secure behind defense firewalls. Others are compromised areas taken over by corruption. Each area has different challenges and types of foes. The principal storyline of the game is a digital cascading failure and the chaos it causes to the network. It is the player’s duty to find the cause of the digital failure and help provide solutions to alleviate it. To do this, the player must do missions and tasks to find out more about the NetMonsters and the system they safeguard. The system is designed to be a sophisticated network, and the enemies, the NetMonsters, are found throughout the digital landscape to protect the system. The design and layout of the game provide a genuine experience of what it is like to be in a giant, complicated, and powerful computer system.

Players looking for a battle challenge can find it in the PvP Arena. Similar to other Pokémon games, players create a team and compete against other players teams. These competitive challenges reward players for refining monster stats and learning and activating strong monster attacks and abilities. Participating in these challenges is fun, but rewarding players with unique and hard to get monster is a great motivator.

Outside challenges reward players with game aids, and a chance to catch Legendary and Mythical Monsters. While most of these events are short lived, they reward the more competitive players and give them an edge over other players who don’t participate.

Overall the competitve events and challenges reward players in many ways and gives them a chance to interact with the community while restoring the main computer system.

Because of this, the game offers tons of replay value. The graphics and styles of the game are futuristic, from the monsters to the interfaces. Everything ties back to the game’s core thematic element of “what if data became sentient?” Therefore, player actions are usually simulating interaction with a sophisticated, sentient network system. The end goal of the game is to become the best player in the network, and defeat and/or capture all the other monsters in the game.
