Doki Doki Literature Club! is an emotional visual novel packed with a unique story centered around a school Literature Club. The player becomes a new member of the club as they interact with different characters including Sayori, Natsuki and Yuri. Each of the characters are uniquely developed and constructed making the game a thrilling and interesting ride. Making the right and wrong decisions in the game are part of the thrill and a unique experience of Doki Doki Literature Club!.

The poem-writing gameplay is perhaps the most prominent feature of the game, drawing inspiration from a variety of places, from visual novels, to RPGs, to particular aspects of anime. The poetry relates to the characters’ arcs and resonates their personality. To put it one way, players craft poems with a focus on a particular character in a club, known as a “Cano.” By doing so, players unlock new story pathways, as well as scenes, that may provide more insight into the cast, including the protagonist. In this way, crafting poetry is another means to connect to the characters, and serves as a core mechanic of the poem-writing system. The game attempts to achieve this through several genres and styles to not only fulfil the player’s desire for something unpredictable, but to shape the player’s understanding of what the story and characters are endeavoring to be and achieve.

The art style and character designs in the game draw inspiration from anime. The backgrounds and scenery in the game are also beautifully designed. All of the members of the Literature Club have many visuals that can be expressed, and these visuals are expressed based on the choices the player makes, as well as changes in the story. The visuals and expressive designs are complemented by a one-of-a-kind soundtrack that helps build and create the mood and tone of the scenes of the game. The soundtrack adjusts to the changes of the story and helps deepen the player’s understanding of the characters and brings out changes in the characters’ personality, like how a character can be happy and cute in one scene, and in the next scene, be serious and determined. The combination of the art style and the soundtrack helps create and cultivate a unique world and and draws players into the unique world of the Literature Club.

Majority of the game’s endings are unlocked with each playthrough. Players are encouraged to replay the game to uncover the true meaning and story, as the different story paths are “hidden” and not really in plain sight. Each choice made by the player influences and alters the course of the narrative, and can ultimately change a character’s ending.
