This involves the need to win the favor of millions of voters, and the skills required to operate within the labyrinth of the government. The focus of the simulation is to provide a glimpse into the political process, and the systems that players will engage with along the way.

One of the systems players interact with is the campaign finance system. Players raise funds for their campaigns from individual and PAC donors, and spend funds to build their campaign structures (headquarters) and pay for ads. Campaign ad strategy is critical, as their ads can influence voters to choose them or not in primaries, and help frame issues the way players want. After primary season and the party convention, players face off against the other major party nominee. During the general election, players have the option to pass legislation as a means to strengthen their campaign. After the general election, players take the oath of office, and sign EOs. Players also have the option to opt out of campaigning and/or passing legislation if they wish to focus on governing.

The aim of the game is to win the presidency, but the game can also simulate the two terms of the presidency, where the players focus is shifted to congress and the supreme court for appointments. Players can also terminate their presidency if they wish to endorse a different candidate for the presidency. Players have to be carefully strategic in how they spend their 8 years to earn the highest approval rating possible.

Players are given deck building mechanics to ‘build’ a deck of possible actions. This deck is used to execute various policies related to the national budget, military, diplomacy, etc. Each card played has specific value or effect and can help influence the outcome of the election in different ways. This creates a balancing act between different needs such as funding military vs. infrastructure. The deck building mechanics requires players to plan a couple steps ahead, manage their resources, and use their available tactics to out maneuver opponents in different political circumstances.

After becoming the president, players can enter a second phase of the game to set, change, or overturn laws in the country, adjust national policies or regulations. The focus of this phase is to execute a political plan or take down a political adversary rather than winning votes. To do this, players must use political maneuvering to defend their interests against opponents that intend to obstruct their plans. The game underscores the concept of timing and long term strategy. The decisions players take in the legislative phase can have impact on the nation and the players’ popularity for long term.

Competition is integral to the simulation and pits players against AI and human opponents. Players must outwit and outlast opponents using their strategic and political skills. Tradeoffs make the game more challenging. Players can choose to spend money, lose popularity or take a less favorable political position. Carefully considering the costs of using military strength or public works to assert power is crucial.
