Players quickly jump into naval warfare in this pirate-themed RPG. You command a ship and are tasked with maneuvering the sea while fighting enemy ships. The game’s tutorial shows players how to keep some tactical distance from enemy ships in order to be within range of their cannons. While exploring the open world, players may come across a sea monster called the Kraken. If the Kraken spots a ship, it may attempt to trap it. Only a few monster attacks are repayable to free the ship from the monster’s grip and continue exploring. Players have the option to completely change their perspective in the game from third to first person. The first person perspective gives players a more realistic representation of the size of the sea and ships while doing so may break the Fourth Wall.
There are seven oceans with many other areas players can explore, and some of these regions may challenge players to adapt to entirely new ways of surviving. The equipment players use on their journey can be improved, like arming and fortifying their ship with stronger gear. Monsters, while limiting exploration of a single area, are quite common throughout the game. Management happens mainly at the seaports. From there, players prepare to take a journey by going through a series of logistics. One of them is finding a crew. Recruiting a crew is important, but so is deployment. Sailors are assigned specific tasks on the ship, like manning the deck and the sails, or operating the cannons. A ship’s efficiency is determined by how crew members are deployed. If a ship is full, the player is forced to take other opportunities to recruit, or strengthen the ship and create more space.
Of course, managing the logistics of a ship also includes the management of weapons and ammo. Players will face many types of foes, from regular human-controlled pirate ships to supernatural creatures like sea monsters. Because of this, players should always make sure they carry enough ammo to load the cannons before leaving a seaport. Also, depending on the situation, the player can move sailors from sails to cannons.
Combat mechanics revolve around positioning and timing. Once a job is selected, the player surrenders some control of the ship and eventually fully controls it for exploration or combat. To attack an enemy ship, the player must first aim using the blue zones which indicate the trajectory of the cannon balls. In order to hit the enemy ship, the player must position their ship so the enemy is within the blue zones for a certain period of time. It takes time for the cannons to fire once the order is given, so the player has to time when the enemy ship will move out of the blue zones.
If a ship is not destroyed during a battle, the player has the option to approach it and board it. Ships receive damage and are shown burning and breaking apart. If the two ships are close enough, a fight between the two crews breaks out and takes the focus away from the ship-to-ship battles. Before the fight, the player can head to the seaports to recruit and upgrade his crew and to improve the ship’s combat readiness. The close-quarters battles along with ship-to-ship battles provide for a good variation in the combat system. The player has to juggle a lot of things, from long-term strategies like alliances and enemy relations to shorter-term things like choosing which crew members to upgrade for battle.
