The game is a journey through time, covering millions of years of human history, from tool use to the evolution of humanity, to the ice age, the stone age, to the metal ages, the renaissance, and all the way to the future. The game covers the advancement of human knowledge in science and technology. Everything from the evolution of shelter, from rough huts, to urbanization, to advanced metropolises, and the buildings within. The game allows players to think about the development of tools and how their people will adapt to advanced social and environmental structures, including changes in government. Watching the evolution from a small tribe to a global superpower is the main part of the experience.

Civ’s time line is split into ages to add a sense of truth and change to game progression. These epochs include Classical, Medieval, Renaissance and Industrial. Each era is defined by it’s own thoughts and ways, architectural styles and tech. For example, industrial buildings look and function nothing like Medieval structures. Long-term needs include bringing about a social climate that fosters discovery and invention. As a civilization’s borders grow, players come in contact with other nations and must develop a military and diplomatic infrastructure to manage their international relations to ensure the country survives.
