About Bring You Home

To rescue your pet who’s been kidnapped? That’s Polo’s mission, and an emotional journey it will be for you, the player, as you experience this story with no dialog. Rather, this game relies on graphics to create a story of devotion and faithfulness. Each hand-drawn frame progresses the tale of Polo as he journeys through an otherworldly landscape to locate his pet. You’ll help him along the way by providing solutions to barriers that prevent him from reaching the goal of each level. Drawing from classic convention of the ‘point-and-click’ adventure game, Polo remains on a continuous path to the level’s exit, and it’s the player’s job to provide Polo with the means to safely accomplish that goal. Players will encounter a broad range of obstacles as Polo journeys through diverse and unusual places.

‘Switch and slide’ is the name of the game in this adventure. An alien landscape awaits Polo and players will use a variety of techniques to control the outcome of Polo’s journey. Background artwork and architectural elements can be altered, swapped, or moved in order to provide Polo with the means to achieve a particular goal. Should Polo come face-to-face with a chasm he can’t cross, the player must manipulate the background to provide a means of crossing the divide. Sick Bridges? How about a trampoline? Bad guys? Maybe using the background to provide a disguise is the solution. To solve the puzzle and move Polo to the next level players must determine the innate rules of the level concerning Polo and the barriers he faces.

The game consists of multiple zones such as a snowy zone, a futuristic zone, and an underwater zone, to name a few. Each zone has different ways to play and different surprises, requiring different ways to figure out how to continue. Each zone has a creature, or rather a puzzle, that requires critical thinking, and creativity to figure out how to defeat it. This puzzle is known as a “logic beast”. This puzzle gets more difficult as you play, requiring better timing for the main character, Polo, to pass through obstacles. Each zone is hand-drawn and changes frequently to keep the game interesting.

One important aspect of the game design is that the main focus is on the player figuring things out, rather than on the player being stopped or punished for making a wrong move. The game does not have any “game overs”. When the player makes a wrong move, the game shows the player an amusing and interesting animation to show the player what the consequence of that move will be. Because of this, players are motivated to make as many moves as possible to see all of the different outcomes that the game has to offer. Overall, this is a good and interesting puzzle game for all ages.

A game’s different zones differ not only in the visuals but in the audio as well. A different score is composed for each zone. Each score embodies the feelings and emotions depicted in the zone. As the player progresses through the story and discovers more of Polo’s world, they become emotionally invested in the journey and want to know what happened to bring Polo there and what they can do to help him. Bring You Home is a title that offers players a unique visual experience along a journey that uses logic and puzzles to stimulate the mind. Each zone incorporates different and unique challenges for players to solve in order to progress to the next zone. The challenge is to think about and utilize the elements and or curios in the background of a given zone.

The level design embodies the concept of surprising the player with different and unique challenges and especially with different means of interaction and puzzles. As one zone ends and another begins, the challenge is to familiarize yourself with the environment and use it to protect and keep Polo safe. Utilizing the areas of a given zone and the surrounding environment is key to guiding and protecting Polo. Locating and using the right items is crucial in helping Polo on his journey.
