With no other options, the family’s only hope is to repay the loan, and if not, face the consequences. Because of this, the young man is forced to abandon his home and familiar surroundings to face an even more dangerous and unknown city. There, he hopes to resolve the debt and manage the problem on his own. There are additional, personal conflicts and concerns facing the main character, among them, the creditor’s daughter who’s in love with him, but whom he also feels an obligation to protect. There is also the conflict of his mother providing him with a necklace to take with him on his journey, and a letter to be given to the main character’s soon to be stepfather which ultimately grants the mother’s son permission to leave his home and face a new life in the big city.

The protagonist sells the necklace that allows him to enter the city. This sale signifies the end of his past, and he becomes driven to find other means to provide for his family. Located at the outskirts of the city, the guard selling the watch allows the protagonist to enter a room where he will be staying. The room provides the protagonist a starting location where he can begin his journey to locate means to earn money, all while planning how he will travel to and rescue his family in Bojong Lima.
