Survival is key in Dead by Extraction. Set in a city infected by a zombie-like virus, players enter the world as an Extraction Shooter. This means players will face off against both other players and computer-controlled mutants. What makes Extraction Shooters unique is the incorporation of players competing against other players. The main drawback of the PVP system is the absence of player vs. environment factors. Players will come across mutants called Rabid Mutants, which players will face absolutely no challenge against and are seriously the only environment hazards players will face, and guard valuable loot. Extraction Shooters are unique because players will have to enter dangerous, mutant inhabited zones and find certain targets to extract, and do all this before the extraction timers run out. Unsuccessful extractions will result in lost progress and reward. Thus, strategically extracting is key for advancement in the game.

The game gives players a lot of choice when it comes to completing missions. Players can go it alone, or bring along friends for up to four player co-op. The game’s AI gives players the option of going it alone, or being part of a larger group, and helps create an experience that rewards teamwork. Players can take different roles, from being the point man on an assault, to covering a withdrawal. No role is more important than helping your group with location of the enemy. Players can even play differently to try and outflank or spread their opponent’s groups. Players have different specializations that help give them different traits like speed, health or armor. Players can even lie prone to help add even more tactics to the game. With the the weapons and gear that players can find, no two players will ever play the game exactly the same way.

This game features ever-changing battlegrounds. The developer changes some rules, adds or removes others. These result in different strategies being optimal for each match. The AI takes into account the player’s previous actions. A particular challenge for a player is determining the optimal strategy based on the current environmental factors. Different strategies may be optimal for the same two players based on what the environmental factors were in each of their previous matches. Mutated enemies can drop various rewards for taking them down, and other players have bounties and targets on their backs. You have to make decisions about whether to risk targeting a rival player and taking on the other players to get the rewards, or if you should take the more conservative approach and head to an extraction zone to eliminate the opposition and rewardless enemies to drop your load and leave with the loot you worked for.

Challenging objectives and time-sensitive tasks create a clear course of action for each mission. Objectives are usually found in high-risk areas of the map and are often accessible only through tough-to-traverse terrain, including high-population density of mutant enemies. These objectives attract players and ultimately create a first-to-claim “end-of-mission” prize. If players successfully claim a mission objective, they then have to protect their objective claim from other players or, in some cases, relocate the objective claim to an extraction point. Missions end when the objective is extracted. Often extraction vehicles alert nearby enemy players of the extraction and of the player’s location. When the mission is ultimately successful, players must use the last of their supplies and ammo to reach the extraction, avoid enemy players, and ultimately escape the extraction zone. The extraction and objective claims create opportunities for players to engage with enemy players, ultimately creating a high-stakes competition for first-to-claim.
