Ace Attorney Investigations 2 follows the career of Miles Edgeworth as he works outside the courtroom to take on more unconventional cases. Like in the main series, gameplay has you defend your client and prove their innocence, but in this spin-off, you shift focus to investigating crime scenes and gathering evidence. You take direct control of Miles and manipulate him through the environments to interact with different objects and people to uncover information. Edgeworth’s understanding of the legal system is put to the test, as the narrative follows a series of events that portray his concerns and doubts about his place in society. The story kicks off not long after he returns to his home country, where he is involved with a big case that rocks the nation. It is Edgeworth’s duty to defend the truth with his evidence and logic in order to bring out the real face behind the false witness. The game also delves into different areas of the legal system in regards to criminal activities, giving you more detective work to do before heading into a courtroom.

The narrative is broken into five larger cases, with each successive case building upon the last, both in terms of complexity and significance. By doing so, they can store particular pieces of information/observations in a mental organizer. The player has the ability to access a specific menu to combine two pieces of logic. If the connection is valid, a new deduction is made. This ultimately leads to new evidence or lines of questioning or granting access to new areas of the investigation. In order to take advantage of this mechanic, a player must keep track of numerous small details and retain the relationships that these pieces of information possess. The mechanic encourages the player to interpret facts in a way that advances the investigation and goes beyond the straightforward collection of evidence. When Edgeworth observes something at a crime scene, he may notice something that doesn’t fully connect with the other observations. The final phase of any investigation is the Confrontation. This phase is conducted by Edgeworth. Edgeworth presents the evidence he has collected to a suspect or witness to point out discrepancies in their testimony. This process is similar to the cross-examinations that occur in other games of the series, but happens in the field during an investigation, as opposed to in the courtroom. The player must listen to a witness’s testimony and then examine the evidence to determine which piece of evidence refutes that testimony. Edgeworth presents the evidence to the witness to obtain a change of testimony. Ultimately, obtaining changes to a witness’s testimony can lead to a confession. The game utilizes orchestral music during these sequences to further increase the drama and provides a sense of urgency to the player to speed up and solve the case. Throughout, the player partakes in environmental exploration from a third-person perspective, logic puzzles through the Logic system, and strategic confrontations. These combined elements create the core experience of this title and offer a compelling, in-depth investigative adventure.
