The latest entry in the award-winning Total War series lets you command the armies of legendary General, Alexander the Great. The goal of the game is to follow Alexander’s campaign as he conquers the known world. Conflicts in the game are played out in large-scale 3D battles, with thousands of soldiers, and are presented as the main attraction. The goal in each of these battles is to capture and hold key locations on the battlefield. Using a mobile device as a portable battlefield, the game offers players a window into waging war as a historical figure. Since each decision has an immediate effect on the battlefield, players are free to experiment with various commands. To bring the armies to life, over 50 new unit types have been created and integrated into the game. The game features a multitude of land-based troops, from the fast-moving Macedonian cavalry to various mercenary units. Another major feature of the game is the flexibility of the Macedonian army. Players can use the game’s version of Alexander’s shock cavalry to break the enemy phalanx and charge into the flanks of the enemy formation, or use the elite Hypaspist infantry to act as a shield wall for the phalanx. Since the Mercenary units are largely unarmored, they offer an effective counter to the phalanx. Ultimately, the game provides a wide array of army compositions to suit almost any player preference.

The mobile port required a full redesign of the user interface to implement touch controls. With mobile devices offering less input options compared to PCs, additional effort must be made to facilitate more control options for players in RTS games. Considering the lay of the land and moving your units to capitalize on high ground are crucial to victory. Each unit has a formation, and this can affect how they engage the enemy. Unit cohesion is key, and being able to stabilize a unit’s formation can give you the upper hand in battle. Using historical doctrines and tactics are built into the game as well. For example, using phalanx formations to defend a position and using flanking attacks with a supporting cavalry unit are encouraged. Like in real life, the goal is to psychologically break the enemy’s will to fight, and this usually determines the outcome of the battle. If you lose your resolve to fight first, you’d better believe the enemy will fight to psychologically break your units’ will to fight. This is important if you want to gain an advantage on the vastly superior Persian and other enemy units.

Four new factions have been added to the game. Each of these has unique military units and methods of warfare. You can command Macedon, and fight against the Persians, Dahae and Illyrians. When you face different factions you must alter your tactics. The Persians are the most dangerous of your enemies, mainly because they have huge armies and can quickly wear you down. The Illyrians and Dahae each have units that counter your armies in different ways. Threats from these factions can be alleviated by diplomacy and politicking, but if you wish to expand your empire you will have to engage in a few Wars to further your dominion.

The goal of the game is to unite the known world and create your own empire. You can do this through different tactics and playstyles. Having a strong emphasis on large scale battles and crucial management systems gives the game a unique take on ancient warfare. You can experience all aspects of being a ancient ruler, general and world dominator. With all of this said the focus of the game remains on the legacy of Alexander. If you are a fan of Alexander or Ancient empires this game is for you. The game has a strong mobile port which is rare in modern gaming. The game is essentially a 30 hour interactive movie with dozens of strategic decisions to make. The game is presented like a visual novel.
