TOTAL WAR: MEDIEVAL II is a turn-based tactics game where the player can recruit and control a huge medieval army. Every adversary comes with different strengths and weaknesses, so every strategy session is a puzzle that needs to be solved through the placement and movement of units.

The core element of the experience is participating in medieval battles. The player controls a leading character and moves armies through a large world. To move armies to different locations, the player has to eliminate blocking armies. Blocking armies consist of various enemy units that the player commands and must destroy strategically to progress. The game focuses on providing a realistic experience, so that the player feels like they are really part of the action. This sense of immersion is strengthened with the game’s clever use of camera placement. As such, players are required to be disciplined in the management of their troops as they can not afford to have their troops fight recklessly and ultimately be reduced to a small unit in the process. Ideally, players should engage in battles in a way that they have the upper hand and at the same time employ tactics to win over a larger enemy force. They should practice tactics that will preserve their army strength for engagements in future battles.
