In this role playing game, the world is post-apocalyptic, with civilizations crumbling. Cities are now ruins, and modern means of communication no longer work. A global pandemic has devastated the planet, further decimating the population. Those infected by the virus become aggressive, violent, and swarming. Though this game draws similarities to other games with swarming undead, the undead in this game represent, and draw inspiration from, people affected by the pandemic, perhaps making the game more realistic and terrifying. As a survivor, players must explore this post-apocalyptic wasteland to learn the cause of the pandemic and attempt to escape before the world fully collapses. There are many dangerous, yet interesting, places to explore, from a decimated city to a dark, dense forest, to secret underground bunkers, to a desolate military zone.

Survival mechanics tie directly into the gameplay mechanics, requiring the player to manage a number of needs concurrently. Of course, one of those needs is staying healthy. Players also have to keep track of how hungry and how thirsty their character is. Fatigue is also a factor. Players have a limited supply of stamina, and actions consume that stamina, meaning players have to rest and recover. Of course, players could always choose to expend ammo in a firefight, but ammo is a precious resource, as is health and stamina, meaning players will always have to make the judgment call as to when to engage in conflict and when to not engage. The crafting and base building systems form the backbone of the player’s ability to interact and shape the world. The resource management system enables players to craft and augment melee and ranged weapons, which ultimately helps players combat a variety of enemy types. Beyond personal equipment, a base building system allows players to construct safe zones. Here players can prepare to defend against zombie waves and manage their personal gear. Exploration is primarily motivated by the need to find the rare resources needed for base building and personal equipment upgrades. Playing an incredibly high-stakes game of cat and mouse, players must decide if the risks of engaging and exploring highly infested zones of the world is worthwhile for the rewards of better personal gear.
